The Philadelphia Flyers season was abruptly ended last week by the New Jersey Devils in a short 5-game series that saw Philadelphia vastly outplayed and generally thunderstruck. Danny Briere lifted the Flyers to a 1-0 series lead after notching the game winner in overtime of game one in Philadelphia but it was all downhill from there. The Flyers organization and fan base are surely disappointed and dejected about being bounced in the 2nd round for the second time in as many years but it is important to look at the big picture when evaluating the 2011-2012 season.   The team saw such a drastic overhaul of the roster last summer...

The Philadelphia Flyers will square off with another familiar division foe in the Conference Semifinals. The New Jersey Devils extinguished the Southeast Division Champion Florida Panthers in double overtime on Thursday night to win the decisive game seven of their first round match-up. The Devils outlasted the Panthers in a series that featured comebacks, momentum swings, and inconsistency by both teams. It took overtime wins in games 6 and 7 for the Devils to fight back from the cusp of elimination and earn their berth in the 2nd round.   The Flyers split the season series with New Jersey finishing with a record of 3-2-1 against...

The Philadelphia Flyers closed out their first round match-up with the Pittsburgh Penguins Sunday afternoon with a series clinching 5-1 victory at the Wells Fargo Center. The series will be remembered most for the wild prolific scoring, the non-existent defense, and the sub-par goaltending through the first four games but the Flyers will likely want to especially remember game six. Not only was this the game that put the final nail in the Penguins’ coffin but it was by far the best full 60 minute effort by Philadelphia of the post season thus far.   Claude Giroux heroically set the tone for the game in the first 30 seconds after...

The Philadelphia Flyers will wrap up the 2011-2012 regular season on Saturday with a matinee game against the Pittsburgh Penguins. On Thursday night the Flyers clamped down and beat the Sabres 2-1 effectively ending Buffalo’s post season aspirations. Unfortunately Pittsburgh bested the Eastern Conference-leading New York Rangers by the score of 5-2 securing the #4 seed in the playoffs. This turn of events has rendered the game on Saturday essentially meaningless as the Flyers are locked into the #5 seed. Regardless of the outcome of Saturday’s game in Pittsburgh the cross-state rivals will begin a best of seven first round series next...

The Philadelphia Flyers have played excellent hockey so far in March and have extended their record this month to 8-1-1. The Flyers struggled with consistency for much of the middle of the season but have seemed to find their stride lately. The combination of strong goaltending, timely scoring, and tireless effort has vaulted Philadelphia back into the race for the Atlantic Division and Eastern Conference leads. Their only loss in regulation over the last couple of weeks came against the Devils on the tail end of back-to-back games which saw the team have to travel from Toronto to New Jersey and play a game in less than 24...

The Philadelphia Flyers seem to have put a lackluster month of February behind them as they transition into March. On February 25th the Flyers put together one of their patented comebacks in Calgary. The Flames posted the first three goals of the game only to see Philadelphia battle back valiantly and eventually tie the game at four to send it into overtime. Neither team could capitalize in the extra session so they moved on to the shootout. The Flyers and goaltender Ilya Byrzgalov have both struggled mightily in shootout situations but Bryzgalov stopped four out of five shooters and Claude Giroux and Matt Read both netted their attempts to...

The Philadelphia Flyers continue to struggle with consistency through February as they enter the final quarter of the regular season. They had their second abysmal weekend in a row two weeks ago. The Flyers suffered their 5th loss of the season to the New York Rangers at the Wells Fargo Center on Saturday, February 11th. That loss makes it seven straight disappointments against the bitter rivals. The next day the Flyers had a big game in Detroit against a Red Wings team who were bidding to tie the NHL record for consecutive wins at home. Despite a strong effort by the Flyers, they lost the frenetic game by a score of 4-3. The Flyers came up...

The Philadelphia Flyers are one game removed from their first three game losing streak of the season. The team is struggling at a crucial time and the competition is beginning to pressure them in the standings. After a shootout loss to Winnipeg at home on January 31st, the Flyers collected a win against the Nashville Predators. Wayne Simmonds notched two goals and Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 26 shots en route to the 4-1 victory. Unfortunately, everything has fallen apart since then. The Flyers had two huge divisional showdowns over the past weekend. On Saturday the New Jersey Devils invaded the Wells Fargo Center and posted the first six goals...
